Online Patient Verification

Online Patient Verification (OPV) is the process where a single patient's Medicare card number is sent to Services Australia and is validated against the details that Medicare holds.

Note: OPV is used for online claiming.

An OPV is run against the patient’s name and Medicare details.

Alternatively, an OVV is run against a patient’s name and DVA details.

An OPV or OVV check happens when:
  • A new patient record is added.
  • An update is made to a patient’s details.
  • A patient presents for the first time on that day.

If there are any discrepancies, in the Patient Details an alert is displayed in yellow. This alert can be dismissed, or the associated details may be updated. If the verification is successful, a success message is displayed.

This verification may take a few minutes to perform, as communication with Services Australia's system is required. A SpinnerSpinner is displayed while it is communicating. A failed message displays if communication cannot be made.

The following patient details are sent to Services Australia as part of the OPV:
  • Given and family names set for Medicare
  • Date of birth
  • Medicare number
  • Medicare reference number
If the OPV finds any discrepancies in the patient's details, Services Australia may return suggested alternatives for the following:
  • Given name
  • Medicare number
  • Medicare reference number
